Happy Earth Day! Eco-Andersonville is excited to celebrate Earth Day’s 40 years of cherishing, honoring, and preserving our planet. One year ago, Eco-Andersonville launched a local sustainable business certification program for Andersonville businesses. The program recognizes businesses that are making a positive impact on People, Planet, and Prosperity by adopting sustainable business practices. When we launched the program, we had three certified businesses in Andersonville. As of today, we have nine businesses! GreenSky, Avalon Chiropractic Clinic, Green Genes, Hamburger Mary’s, Joel Berman Architecture & Design LTD, SIR Spa, The Coffee Studio, Visionary Eye Care, and Painted Light Photography & Framing Gallery!

Andersonville is a special place to do business and to shop, dine, and play. Our community’s commitment to sustainability and our dedication to our unique, local businesses set us apart. We hope that you enjoy Earth Day! And remember to shop, dine, and play sustainably at our eco-Andersonville certified businesses.

Your Ride’s On Us! Getting to Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood by car or CTA is free from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. To reward holiday shoppers who patronize the neighborhood, the “Your Ride’s On Us!” program will reimburse parking or CTA fees when customers spend at least $20 during their visit to Andersonville. The promotion will last from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day. To receive their refunds, customers mail their parking receipt or print-out from the CTA’s Chicago Card Plus website, and the receipt from their purchase, to the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce.

For complete details, visit www.andersonville.org/freeride.

NEW! Email option: You can also email scanned copies of the receipts and documentation. Save a stamp (and a tree)!

CTA fares are being reimbursed to encourage sustainable forms of transportation – an effort that dovetails with the aims of the eco-Andersonville program run by the Andersonville Development Corporation, a sister organization of the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce. Maypole Dance

We hear it a lot this time of year: “I love Midsommarfest!” “I always make sure I’m in town that weekend.” “It’s my favorite festival of the whole summer!”

We all know there’s something special about Andersonville, and it seems to rub off on our yearly street bash. Like Andersonville, Midsommarfest is just about the most colorful, inclusive, vibrant blend you could imagine. Folks of every age, stripe, culture, demographic, and level of fabulousness join in a exuberant celebration of all that is Andersonville: from Swedish dancers to shirtless boys, from falafel to free family fun, from neighbors to ‘nother beer. Add to that over 50 bands, selections from some of our best local restaurants, and the best darn people watching this side of Wrigley Field, and you have what we think is the greatest party in town.

Midsommarfest is a world-class event, but it serves another function too. The funds raised at Midsommarfest support pretty much every other program that the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce and Andersonville Development Corporation produce year-round on behalf of the local, small businesses that make our community great. I spent Memorial Day weekend in Denver at the annual conference of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). BALLE is a network of networks, a national organization of local business associations (like chambers) that share a vision of an economy led by small, local businesses, based on environmental sustainability and economic justice. If you ever wondered what role Andersonville businesses have in saving the planet, read on! Read the rest of this entry »
