As most of you know by now, the first day of the first ever Andersonville Farmer’s Market is tomorrow, Wednesday, June 24th from 4:00-8:00 pm on Berwyn between Clark & Ashland. Considering we are just starting we find it funny that according to the voters at Parents Connect we are the second best market in Chicago, but we certainly have been amazed by the enthusiasm and support from the neighborhood for this market. We look forward to seeing many of you out and about on Wednesday evenings.
For a complete list of vendors and our generous sponsors for 2009, please click here. For the schedule of entertainment and demonstrations for tomorrow’s market, and to find out how you can help keep the market free of new plastic bags, please follow me after the jump.
Bring your own bags to the Andersonville Farmers Market and help us make our market free of new plastic bags! If you forget, we’ll have a supply of used bags you can take. Simply bring in bags you have piled up in your kitchen or car, and we’ll give them to folks who forgot to bring bags for their purchases or came straight from work without a reusable bag. Look for the “Free Bag, Re-Bag” recycling bins at the front of the market. We’ll take both plastic bags and reusable tote bags.
You can also buy Andersonville’s own reusable shopping bag, the Re-Bag, at the Market for $15. It’s a sturdy, canvas bag with one over-the-shoulder strap and enough room to fit all of your market purchases! Andersonville Re-Bags will be available at the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce booth each week at the market as long as supplies last.
For entertainment and demonstrations, check out:
4:30-5:15 pm – John Knecht & The Birthplace of Rhythm. This drumming group performs rhythms and songs from the Middle East, Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia leading an entertaining exploration of percussion around the world.
6:00-8:00 pm – Urban Worm Girl. Urban Worm Girl will demonstrate the in’s and out’s of vermiculture. “Basically, it’s recycling kitchen waste using the wisdom and efficiency of Red Worms – simple, clean and odorless. Whether it’s in your house or apartment, worm composting is a reminder of our interconnectedness to the earth and all of its living beings”
7:00-8:00 pm – Tamira Son. Tarima Son was formed in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago in January 2002 and has been fortunate enough to be contracted to perform in various venues around the Chicago area like the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Folk and Arts Fest in Evanston, The Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, The Field Museum and Others on a continuous basis, and in prestigious Festivals like the Folklife Fest of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.
